Safe Walk to School Task Force-We are excited our neighborhood children may have to opportunity to walk to school. Grassroot efforts are underway to form a human “schoolbus”/parent supervised walk groups to school. There are several trails leading to Country Ridge and then to the school. Contact Jana Walker for more information on Safe Walk to School 205-907-7362. She is helping coordinate Country Ridge. Current trails have been around for 25+ years, are primitive and all are located on private homeowner’s property.Anyone wishing to use these trails must get clearance with homeowners, respect private property & parental monitoring needed. These trails are not for weekend or after hours use.At any time the homeowner can change their mind and stop the use of the trail.
-
We will not allow non-neighborhood residents to park in our circles or streets* to drop off or pick up children afterschool. This became a major issue for Central and surrounding neighborhoods. If you see this occurring, please notify the non-emergency police number 978-0139. *This can only occur IF a homeowner grants permission for a non-resident to park in their private driveway (NOT street).
-
We are expecting larger numbers for cars traversing our streets to avoid Dolly Ridge congestion, we have requested extra police presence for the first month to ensure drivers & pedestrian safety.
-
When entering neighborhood from Rocky Ridge or Dolly Ridge, please yield and allow cars to safely make a right hand turn.

You are receiving this email to update the entire neighborhood of a disturbing incident which occurred Friday night. Please read carefully the following incident report:
While walking her dog on Friday night, Jan 11th at approximately 10:45 pm, a neighbor was approached by a group of older youths. When confronted, the youths pursued her with verbal obscenities and threats. The neighbor was fearful for her personal safety. Even after entering her home, the group continued to taunt and threaten her from outside. Police were called. This is the second-time police action has been requested for an incident on this street. These same youths are thought to be the ones responsible for vandalism at Halloween and another incident on Jan 1st. The once innocent pranks have now escalated into a criminal act based on the physical nature of their actions and direct personal threats to a homeowner. HOA has been in contact with the VHPD and an increased patrol presence has been requested.
To date, the concentrated area of loitering and roaming has been observed between Birchwood and Water Oak Road, along Whetstone Road; additionally, activity has been observed in the wooded areas of power line easements. Two specific vehicles have been identified with these youths. These vehicles were present in each incident and descriptions have been turned over to police. Police suspect most of the youths to be between 14-16 years old with two of driving age. Incidents are occurring between 9-11:00 primarily, with one incident around midnight. They are all white males, wearing dark colored clothing, hoods or heads covered, average to 6 ft tall, deep voices and strong, threatening vocabulary. We feel one or more of the group is from or familiar with our neighborhood since mostly on foot and sometimes disperse into wooded areas.
We need to stop this aggressive group behavior immediately before someone gets hurt. A real concern is that the “Stand your Ground” rule could apply if the situation occurs again. As an HOA we will utilize surveillance methods and higher police patrols to deter or eliminate these actions. Please be advised that this level of threatening and aggressive behavior cannot be tolerated by the neighbors of Countrywood and Countrywood Highlands or the Vestavia Police Department. If you are the parents of these youths in question or might know who they are, please take immediate action to stop this behavior before police action and legal prosecution is called into play.
The Countrywood & Countrywood Highlands HOA Board members will fully cooperate and support the Vestavia Police in this matter. If you have any further questions, concerns or information to share with the HOA, please contact countrywod35243@gmail.com or Sgt. Crim, VHPD 205-978-0119, ecrim@vhal.org.

HOA Information & Reminders
Have you looked at our neighborhood website? We keep this site up to date with newsletters, events, photos, residents, and important city links like trash, animal control, library, etc…. Often we receive emails requesting HOA covenants & bylaws regarding various neighborhood issues. www.countrywood35243.com has our covenants under THE NEIGHBORHOOD tab.
Pets- PLEASE keep your dogs on a leash & clean up after your dogs while walking. Wandering dogs have been an issue during the holidays. We encourage everyone to be diligent in checking electric fencing & batteries in electric collars for your dogs. There is a lease law in the city which we follow in Countrywood. Please refer to the Vestavia link for information about leash laws and animal control. https://vhal.org/departments/police-department/animal-control/
Countrywood & Countrywood Highlands Group emails– It is important to remind residents that both Google Group emails are used ONLY for HOA newsletters, weather, police, safety emergencies or city request notices. At times you may get similar notices from both groups if event or emergency concerns both neighborhoods. If you need to contact HOA, please do not respond to google group emails; rather, contact countrywood35243@gmail.com. We are not setup to send out group notices for daily items- lost dogs, lost items, etc… (Countrywood Highlands does have an interactive email for these purposes if you wish to join.) Individuals also cannot post to the entire group, only the secretary can post announcements. Thank you for entrusting us with your contact information. We strive to protect your privacy and time. We try to respond within 24 hours of receiving an email.
We have ordered new, upgraded lighting for our signage at the entrance. Thank you Justin Allred for working to improve our entrance. We will need volunteers to plant our spring flowers, contact us if willing to help.
We are excited about the new changes coming for our elementary children. Please keep up with the progress & improvements to the Dolly Ridge campus-https://www.vestavia.k12.al.us/domain/2033 . There is also an innovative movement to start a walking trail & supervised Safe Walk to School Task Force program. Organizational lunch meeting will be held on Jan 15, noon, in the City Hall Executive Conference Room. If you are interest please contact Lyndsay Gunn, lynsgunn@gmail.com.

2019 Countrywood Dues- Collected November 15-January 15
Did you receive your property tax notice? That is also your reminder that our yearly $75 HOA dues are collected in the same time frame. These dues are a vital resource for our neighborhood. Approximately $5,000 goes to the upkeep and maintenance of the entryways. Another $1,800 is needed for insurance, taxes and utilities. The rest of our funds are used for neighborhood activities. You may pay by check or PayPal. Look for a separate email from our Treasurer, Mike Steppe with payment information. Last year we had the tremendous response of 141 families (95%) paying dues. Our goal is 100% this year.
A special thanks to Justin Allred. Justin has volunteered to manage and oversee the maintenance of our entrance way on Rocky Ridge. Welcome to the HOA board Justin!

March 2018
Hello Countrywood Neighbors,
March is finally here and Spring is in the air. We apologize if this is a longer newsletter, but we have many items to report to you this month.
Coyote Update
The City of Vestavia Hills and Vestavia Police, Officer Coleman, are working with a licensed trapping service to catch our local unwanted visitors. Since many of you reported sightings, they are placing traps in wooded areas bordering our neighborhood. These traps are considered the most effective in catching coyotes and numerous ones have already been trapped in the Rocky Ridge area in past two weeks but none in our area yet. Please keep your domestic animals out of the woods and on leashes during this critical time. If you see a coyote on your property, please continue to report sightings to VHPD on their no-emergency line 205-978-0124 . The city is continuing to map these sightings with hopes of finding the dens.
Treasurer HOA Board Member
We are pleased to announce two new board members. Please welcome Mike Steppe as the main treasurer, and April Arendall as our new assistant treasurer. We also want to thank Jane Bochnak for her years of volunteering to keep our records, organizing our bills and performing duties over and above her treasurer position.
2018 Board Members
Scott Prier, President, Alan Anthony- Vice-President, James Saville, ITT, Celia Anthony & Terry Manown, Sunshine & Welcome, Mike Steppe & April Arendall, treasurers. We would love to add a position for Social Chairman if anyone is interested in helping coordinate activities with Countywood Highlands.
Entry Update
We are very excited that the construction is finished at our entry. We are working with the brick mason to see if the stucco finish will cure and harden to eliminate line between old and new structure. With rains and cold weather, this process will take until spring to cure 100%.
New Additions
Congratulations to Don and Deana Lawyer on Water Oak Drive on the birth of identical twin granddaughters, Emma Dean and Lucy Kate, born 2/3/18 to daughter Nicole and husband Drew Lowery. Mom, dad and babies are doing well!

Rocky Ridge Road Entrance Update
We are near completion and the results are stunning. We are receiving compliments from city officials, realtors, guest and neighbors. Due to the age of the brick structure, adjustments had to be made to the proposed design but everyone is pleased with the final results. Thank you for supporting this special project. A total of 144/151 homes or 95% contributed. Approximately, $30,600* was received in contributions, and the HOA contributed approximately $5,000 from escrow. The final project will be just over $36,000 with any overage coming from 2018 budget. A special thank you to Alan Anthony who managed the job, and watched our budget. *Countrywood Highlands neighbors donated $1,700 which allowed us to upgrade electrical and irrigation. As soon as the weather clears, the fence will be stained and final items completed. Job well done!

We will have an opening in our HOA Board and would love to have new faces to help us move forward in 2018.

*The HOA owns the half acre plot at the Rocky Ridge Road entrance. From dues collected, we must provide insurance, pay taxes, utilities and perform routine and unscheduled maintenance on this property. This renovation was necessary due to the drought & years of over growth. The city deemed many trees hazardous and these must be removed. Please check the website to view the master plan.
Dear Countrywood Neighbors,
Happy Fall! Hope everyone is settling into a normal pace now that summer is over and school has started. We have many upcoming neighborhood & community events, so we apologize for extended length of this newsletter. .
New Rocky Ridge Entrance construction will begin in a few weeks. PLEASE drive slowly when entering or exiting, and if traveling Rocky Ridge stop shy of entrance to allow left turning cars to exit onto Rocky Ridge safely. Be courteous and respectful of workers. We must remove 11 dead pine trees, damaged shrubbery and refurbish the existing brick wall. At times, this will require lane closures and large trucks partially blocking the roads. Please YIELD and allow cars to pass. Work will last approximately 2 weeks.
Parking Concerns– Due to safety reasons, we request that families limit parking on streets unless it is a special event. This is especially true of the main through streets of Whetstone & Countrywood Lane.
Safety– The Vestavia Hills Police are warning that several cars have been vandalized in VH neighborhoods and two cars stolen from driveways. All of these were unlocked cars. Please lock your cars, and do not leave purses, backpacks or keys inside cars.
Construction & Landscaping Services, strict 7:00 am start time– Please remind contractors or landscape maintenance workers to NOT BEGIN WORK UNTIL 7:00 am. This is a Vestavia Ordnance, not CW subdivision. If you are having issues, please first talk with your neighbor and/or contractor. Then if not resolved and is regularly occurring, contact City Hall- Building Safety Department 978-0125 (open 7:00am-4:00pm) or call Police non-emergency 978-0139. A building permit must be displayed and it will state if extended times are allowed.
Special Election Tomorrow–
There is an important election tomorrow, Tuesday, 9/26. The US Senate Republican Primary Run-off 2017. This is a rare event, and many times turn out is low. Only 17% of voters voted in the primary last month. Please exercise your right to vote. Our poling location is the Metropolitan Church of God, 2800 Metropolitan Way, Birmingham, Al 35243. (This is the same location as presidential race elections.) Polls open from 7:00am- 7:00pm.
City of Vestavia Hills- Join the fun at “Community Night Out”, Tuesday, October 3rd from 5:30- 8:00pm. The Vestavia Hills Police & Fire Departments invite everyone is invited to join them at City Hall for a free event filled with local entertainment, public safety demonstrations by our First Responders, inflatables, a rock climbing wall, and food.
Volunteers from both CW & CW Highlands needed-
Fall Display, Hayride & Joint Social, Sunday, Oct 29th– We would like to plan a Fall neighborhood social. Tentatively, Hayride will begin at the dead end of Whetstone Road and travel the full length of Whetstone. Then the Popsicle truck will be there for refreshments. Everyone welcome!! But we need volunteers to help plan. Please contact Sunshine Committee as soon as possible to make this fun event happen! Love to have neighbors, grandchildren, etc.. Maybe wear your Halloween costumes! If anyone would like to help decorate entrances or plan street decorations, please let us know ASAP.
Christmas Door Decoration Contest- Doors need to be decorated by Wednesday, December 6th and judging will be December 19th. Help needed in securing prizes, judging and placing signs in yards.
Thank you for taking the time to submit information to our Countrywood Welcome & Sunshine Committee.

Neighbor Spotlight
Barbara McCullough- 2552 Old Oak Lane. The McCullough family was the first family to move into our neighborhood in 1979. Thank you, Barbara, and family for keeping this great neighborhood your home for 38 years.
Social Committee needed
We need a few volunteers to plan social events on a quarterly basis. These events have been lacking primarily due to busy schedules & lack of organization. These can be adult or children events which will bring our community together.
Parking Concerns
Due to safety reason, we request that families limit parking on the street as a daily occurrence. We understand that on special occasions or holidays you will have guest and require additional parking; however, for family vehicles, please find a solution to fit cars in the driveway. Also, covenants do not allow boats, campers, trailers, or other large equipment to be parked on streets or driveways for more than an excess of 48 hours. A full list of covenants can be found on our website https://countrywood35243.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Countrywood-Covenants.pdf

Entrance Update
A special thanks to Cassie Tonsmeire, Monica Stewart, Scott Prier, Celia Anthony, Terry Manown, Jane Bochnak, and Becky Ferguson for volunteering to help start the process of renovation of our Rocky Ridge entrance way. This will be the major project for our HOA in 2017. Due to the high expense, it will likely be completed in phases and take 2-3 years to complete. Look for a full email from Countrywood HOA with details.
2016 Home Sales
A special thanks to Kathy Smith for compiling our year end statistics of days on market, listing price, selling price and average sales price. We have uploaded her information on the website under the Neighborhood tab- Home Sales. ( https://countrywood35243.com/the-neighborhood/home-sales) These statistics are very interesting and keep everyone up to date on home values in our neighborhood.
Vandalism/Mischief Reports
With warmer weather comes more movement and mischief. We have received reports from Creekwood and Old Oak Lane of windows being broken with BB-gun pellets. Please caution your children about the dangers of firing into a residential area. Also, groups of children are cutting through backyards and causing disturbance in wooded areas. Encourage your children to seek permission if they use these short cuts or play areas, and to act respectfully to all homeowners. While these are not severe issues they are causing conflicts. According to Vestavia Police, we do not have any new reports of burglary or police action. However, speeding on Countrywood Lane is a reported problem and several homes have requested that officers monitor this thoroughfare and that the possibility of a stop sign be considered at Old Oak intersection. With spring break coming, please keep doors locked for homes and cars. Vestavia has seen a rise of theft from unlocked cars parked in driveways. Be on watch for suspicious activity.
HOA Updates/Thanks for Great Response on Dues
As of March 1st, 142 out of 150 families have paid their 2017 dues. We are very excited to almost reach the 100% mark. We encourage every family to participate. All funds will be needed to start the new renovation of entranceway. Lastly, our new website is up and running. It has information about HOA, residents, city of Vestavia, updates, newsletters and social events. https://countrywood35243.com/
Any questions should be directed to the HOA board at: countrywood35243@gmail.com. We try to answer within one business day.
Our Deepest Sympathy
Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of our Countrywood neighbor, Joann Yarbrough. Please keep Bob and the Yarbrough family in your prayers during this difficult time of loss. Their family wishes to give a special thanks to the Creekwood neighbors who helped with food and cards.
